GlobeCycle

I’m sore just reading about this! James Bowthorpe has set a goal to raise £1.8 million for Parkinson’s Disease research by breaking the record for cycling around the world in 150 days (that’s about 18,000 miles on a bike…) Another great example of athletes creating change through sport.

Hardcore Sitting

I’m still in shock from watching this video. After Mike’s recent post about a paralyzed skateboarder, Shawn added a comment about Aaron Fotheringham and his extreme sitting. It takes more than paralysis to suppress an athletes desire to express themselves. Aaron is living proof.

What is holding you back?

Hey Guys,

It has been a while since I have posted. I have a million lame excuses why. We all do. That is what this post is going to be all about. God willing none of us will ever have a “real set back.” Sometimes we have to call ourselves on our own b.s.. Stop and think about it. What is really holding you back? In the mean time check out this video:

Daniel Pelletier absolutely kills it! Imagine the balls it takes just to be a kid that is “different.” I am so impressed that he even at the skatepark and then throw in the fact that he absolutely kills it! So again I ask you: What is your excuse? I guess none of us has one. Now get out there and make it happen this holiday weekend!

Achilles

I recently had the pleasure of kayaking on the Hudson with a group of disabled athletes who are part of a program in NYC called “Achilles”. The group primarily does running but they also do tandem biking, hand cycling and now they have added kayaking. They were training for a circumnavigation of Manhattan. Pretty awesome stuff and not an easy feat!

“Achilles is a worldwide organization, represented in sixty countries. Our mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics, promote personal achievement, enhance self esteem, and lower barriers.”

Not only is it a great way for people with various disabilities to engage in sport but also for people passionate about athletics to volunteer their time doing what they love. Find a chapter near you and get involved!

3 Days of Walking

I just saw a news story on the Breast Cancer 3 Day benefiting Susan G. Koman for the Cure. If you haven’t heard about it, a bunch of women and a few brave men set out on foot for a 3 day, 60 mile walk. The walk raises millions of dollars and goes to show that athletes (yes, walking is athletic) can make a huge impact.

2010 registration is open and with 1 whole year to train, you shouldn’t have any excuses! :)
