Sharsheret

I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Rochelle Shoretz but have heard some amazing things. She attended First Descents to learn how to kayak this past summer and is an avid athlete. She is a Jewish single mother of 2 with stage 4 breast cancer. Through her journey with cancer she started Sharsheret, a national organization of cancer survivors dedicated to addressing the unique concerns of young Jewish women facing breast cancer. Sharsheret is Hebrew for “chain”. Please take a second to check out her site HERE

Special Olympic Games

Here is a slide show put together by a friend of mine who is very involved in the Special Olympic Games. It’s a great thing to watch and if enough people watch it, they will receive an autographed guitar by Michael Franti to be auctioned off to raise money for the Games.

Jarem Frye

“Most people who lose a leg dream of walking again. For adaptive athlete Jarem Frye, the inventor of a spring-loaded prosthetic knee transforming the lives of amputees, that wasn’t nearly enough. He wanted to fly.”

Life Turns

AG featured an exclusive interview with Max Mancini after we first started this blog. Why? Because Max embodies the giving spirit that every athlete should strive for. He is a long time friend, amazing athlete and all around good guy. I had a chance to visit with Max while filming with Warren Miller this summer about his foundation Life Turns. They hosted their first program last winter and it could not have gone any better. The program marked a big step in a long journey of healing after Max lost his girlfriend and unborn child in a car accident that he himself barely survived. Most people would have given up but Max made a choice to help children by giving them the gift of winter sports. Please read this article by ESPN.com and support Life Turns.

Pura Vida No Pro

This is a great event where pro surfers get together and introduce the sport of surfing to some local Costa Rican kids.

Halle Tecco

Halle Tecco is the founder of Yoga Bear and recently posted this article in the Huffington Post. It provides great insight on smaller giving in a tough economy.

Nick Vujicic

Athleticism isn’t so much about ability as it is about heart. We break boundaries when we set our minds to it and push our bodies to get there. At the end of the day the best athletes are the ones who give a damn. Nick is a great reminder that you can have the most able body in the world but without heart to drive it, you’re going nowhere.

Patrick Kearney’s Quest for Meghan

Meghan is a young adult breast cancer survivor who, like so many young adults, lost control of her life with a diagnosis of cancer. What she didn’t know at the time was that she would be able to take back the control with an experience of whitewater kayaking at a program called First Descents.

Her brother, obviously moved by her experience, has set out to do his part as well. He is competing in the Silverman Triathlon to raise money in her honor and support other young adults who need to regain control of their life.

Please check out his fundraising page and support him in his efforts to make a difference through athletics.

AIDS Walk

A good friend just informed me that he’ll be participating in a walk to “make AIDS history.” Walks are a great way for athletes to get involved and give back to a cause they care about. Learn more about his efforts HERE
